JOIN US THIS SUMMER AND IMPROVE YOUR COMMUNICATION SKILLS!
Our summer program runs from June 11-August 3, 2018. Two treatment sessions per week are recommended. You may schedule your child for 4, 6 or 8 weeks of treatment. The weeks of treatment do not need to be consecutive, although consistency of treatment enhances progress.
There is an 8 treatment session minimum requirement.
We design out treatment programs to meet the individual needs of our clients. All treatment sessions combine well researched traditional treatment techniques, “edutaining” tools from the World Wide Web and innovative, multi-modal, educational assistive technology.
Clients may choose to work on one or more areas : ARTICULATION OF SPEECH SOUNDS, FLUENCY, VOICE, MYOFUNCTIONAL TREATMENT, ORAL HABIT ELIMINATION, ORAL LANGUAGE , SOCIAL THINKING AND PRAGMATICS, READING, WRITTEN LANGUAGE , AND EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONS.
VERBAL EXPRESSION AND SPEECH SOUND PRODUCTION
Improve semantic organization and storage strength, expand vocabulary and syntax and learn word retrieval strategies. Acquire a variety of mental maps to organize language for social and academic purposes. Consider the purpose for speaking, the specific content , the listener’s perspective and the listener’s need for background information. Improve the production of speech sounds, speech fluency and overall speech intelligibility. The goal of this treatment program is to improve confidence and competence by teaching new skills and strategies and by giving opportunities for repeated practice in structured and authentic spontaneous speaking contexts.
AUDITORY PROCESSING AND COMPREHENSION OF INCOMING LANGUAGE
Learn how to listen, remember and understand incoming language that increases in length, in syntactic complexity and in level of abstraction. The goal of this treatment program is to improve the child’s ability to receive meaning from what they hear. Learn strategies to attend to verbally imparted messages, to hold onto incoming information in working memory, to organize and store information and to generalize the use of strategies to new contexts. Treatment will include opportunities to use computer technology designed to enhance auditory processing, sound/phonemic development and gaining meaning from factual information, directions , stories and text.
Learn self-talk strategies and the use of language as a self – guiding system to make an action plan and to self monitor behaviors. Conscientious speech-language pathologists recognize that addressing executive function skills is necessary for effective treatment. Learn to identify what needs to be done, to plan, to organize, to determine the sequence of tasks in order to complete larger projects, to initiate tasks, to sustain attention, to self evaluate and to use feedback in self-corrective ways.

OROFACIAL MYOFUNCTIONAL TREATMENT
Orofacial Myofunctional Treatment is a therapeutic program to establish the proper functioning of the tongue and facial muscles used at rest and for swallowing. Correct resting position of the tongue and correct swallowing depend upon the muscles and nerves of the tongue, cheeks and throat to work together in a harmonious pattern.
Orofacial Myofunctional Treatment is a sequenced program of painless, daily exercises designed to activate certain muscles to function properly, which in turn, encourages other muscles to follow suit until the tongue and facial muscles become properly and permanently coordinated at rest and for speaking and eating purposes.
ORAL HABIT ELIMINATION PROGRAM
The ORAL HABIT ELIMINATION PROGRAM aims to get rid of thumb and finger sucking, as well as those triggers associated with thumb sucking. (ex. blankets, hair twirling). The program establishes a working partnership between the therapist and the family in order to establish new routines, to implement strategies that are unique, creative and engaging, to set up daily communication systems between the therapist and the child and to develop a behavioral modification and reward system that is motivating for an individual child. The program includes a comprehensive initial evaluation and a parent- child- therapist consultation to establish goals, to develop innovative craft projects to mask the thumb or fingers at night, to teach alternative behaviors to keep a child busy at rest, to train in “tongue gymnastics” and to create special celebrations to mark new “rites of passage.” Parents are guided to coach their child through a thorough understanding of the oral facial structures and neuromuscular movements, of what to say to their child and how to say it, and of how to develop behavior modification system. The goal of the program is to move a child from an extrinsic reward system to intrinsic motivation to continue new ways of behaving. They will feel proud of themselves because they were part of the solution and were able to “kick the habit.”
